I can't write about the SuperBowl, I just won't do it (even though, technically, I just mentioned it). I'm sure you'll get plenty of "best commercial" propaganda over the course of the day on the radio, amongst friends, etc...I'll just let that topic be the juggernaut it is and and move on to something different.
Last week, my wife and I found out that we are going to be having a baby boy this coming July. We are thrilled to have this addition to our family. Over the past couple of days, I've thought about what it means to be a boy, a brother, a father, and a husband. What does that all entail? Over the past couple of days, I've realized even further the importance of the masculine role within a family, and how we have gotten away from that more and more as a generation. With the cost of living so high in Southern California, it is hard to separate the gender roles at times with two working adults to bring in income, and both adults sharing household duties.
However, I do want to focus on the importance of the male role in the family. Regardless of the working situation, or who is doing what around the house, it is so important for a father to provide strength and confidence to both his wife and his kids. For all the men out there, I want to encourage us to always be the person who can be looked up to as the spiritual leader of the family, and to provide all young children with a life example that should be mimicked. I understand that none of us are perfect, and that we all have our faults, but we all have younger people who look up to us that need someone that can be a positive influence in their life.
