I was watching a few minutes of playoff football this weekend, and thought about what the Chargers might have played like against the Ravens, if the Chargers had actually played up to their ability, won their division, and replaced the Chiefs in the postseason. I thought of this as the Chiefs were beat rather badly by the visiting Baltimore Ravens. I couldn't help but think the Chargers would have put up a better fight in that game.
But, thinking of all of this meaningless "stuff," it made me think about missed opportunities in general. In life, we have a window of time to be responsible with what God has given us. We have a period of time where we need to show God that we can manage what He gives us, and as a result of that, He will be true to bless us with even more responsibility in heaven. Just like a football season with only 16 games to prove your grit, we only have a short period of time on this earth to accept Christ into our life and accept heaven as our personal residence for eternity.
But, there is one main difference here. In a sports season, you know there is a given amount of time to play catch-up if you get off to a slow start. But, in life, we never know when our time is gone. So, we need to take care of our salvation, and love one another today, to be given the blessing of eternal life. There is no "next season" in our relationship with God. This life is our one and only opportunity.
