Another Slow Start

Another year, another slow start for my beloved San Diego Chargers. Each of the past 4 seasons, the Chargers have found themselves sitting at 2-3, making the road to the playoffs much harder than it really needs to be. If you ask me my opinion, it's a lack of discipline from this team that is the root of all of their slow starts year after year. I think our fans in the city have lost interest in a mid-season hot streak, and would much rather see the team play well from week one. All in all, we're sick of it as Charger fans.

I find that life as a Christian is similar. When we live in such a way that we justify the same mistakes over and over again, the story gets old while the compassion and understanding from those around us fade away. I watched the game this weekend, after yet another unexplainable loss, with a growing feeling of detachment. I don't want to live my life as someone who continues to get off to "slow starts." I don't want to be a dad who constantly yells at his kids and quickly follows it with yet another apology. I don't want to be the friend who, time after time, can't keep something confidential. After a while, our excuses run out.

As an adult, mistakes are going to happen. It's part of being a human with a tendency to sin. But through time, we have to get to a point in life where we change the course of our actions, or change the reactions we have to our surrounding circumstances. Apologies to friends for continual gossip will run out someday. Lashing out in anger will someday forever distance us from those we love the most.

Let's try to stop some of the ugly trends and habits we have in our lives before it becomes too late. Obviously, it's never too late for God to forgive anything and everything, but the truth is that human beings don't have the same capacity for forgiveness. Let's make the changes we need to make before it's too late, and continue to hold onto our strengths.
