Paralyzed Effort

This past weekend my family and I went camping up at the beach in San Clemente. Between the sun, surf, bonfires, and conversation with family, we had a great weekend, to say the least. One of highlights of camping is making "Betty's" over the fire--a traditional family dessert that's here to stay for a while!

When we were starting to cook our first round of "Betty's," to my surprise, my daughter, Brianna, said she wasn't going to have one because her throat was hurting. In talking with Brianna, my wife and I discovered that Brianna didn't have a sore throat, but that she was forming a habit of over-thinking when she would swallow, ultimately causing her to have difficulty in swallowing her food. Brianna would focus so much on swallowing that she was having trouble doing that simple thing she has been doing for years. I used to do the same thing as a kid.

You see, we often do this as adults. We try so hard at something, we become paralyzed. For instance, when I try overly hard to be relaxed on a sales call with a homeowner, it comes across as unnatural. This same thing happens when we try so hard to appear to be in a right and good relationship with God. We can come across as "fake" to those who don't yet know the Lord. I would encourage us all this week to be who God has called us to be, and nothing else. The most we can do to further the kingdom of God is to just be who we are in Christ. When we are in a prayerful relationship with God, we feel our calling and become more natural with Jesus and a life centered around Him. Let's do our best to be in tune with what God is calling us to be in every area of our lives, and nothing more.
