A little over a year ago, my wife and I bought our fist home. At the time, I had no idea of the amount of work that it would take to manage everything from A to Z. My wife and I are extremely blessed to have two great men as our fathers who are very willing to help with projects of any sort. Both of them being in the construction industry, no project is impossible.
About a week ago, my dad and I checked off yet another thing on the list--we built a retaining wall along the side of the home at the bottom of our bank. But before we built it, we decided to make this a wall with a bit more meaning than just an ordinary retaining wall. We wanted it to be a "Nehemiah" wall. You see, when the walls of Jerusalem were rebult after the Israelites returned from their exile to Babylon, Nehemiah built a wall around the city of Jerusalem in order to protect their families, their language, their heritage, etc...
I wanted this wall to symbolize protection for my family. I want to be able to look at that wall and remember what we stand for: our values, our morals, and our relationship with God.
There are times in our lives when we need to retailiate to a place of refuge. We need mentors in our lives to bring us out of depression. We need a group of men or women we open up to when we lose our job in this economy, or when a loved one passes away. There is a lot to be said for establishing walls around our values, and to have discipleship partners to go through life with, especially when life gets tough. I challenge us all to find those closest to us that will be able to encourage us throughout the years to come. We all need a place of refuge from time to time. For me, it's my family and a few close friends God has blesses me with.
