Traveling. Alternative Energy. Sushi.
All three of these things have struck more as modern popularities spreading throughout our American culture (especially amongst post-collegiates). Upon graduating from college, we want to see the world and change the world. We want to experiment values and customs from so many different cultures.
I've really noticed throughout the past few years that so many young people want to change the world beyond our American borders and pull us out of a limited global perspective. "Yes, we can." Now, I'm all for supporting charities and the development of third world countries, but, I've noticed (myself included) that it's been so easy recently to get caught up in so much of the hoopla around pop-culture, attention-grabbing charity events, that it's caused a separation from our perspective on the reality of the need for Jesus. We can never save ourselves.
I feel that our society has reconized the need for each other and the desperate cry for loving our neighbors as ourselves. But, we still haven't reached the point in our socitey where we have fully recognized our need for God's grace over everything else. It seems as if at times we are trying to change the world without God--we're trying to do it on our own accord. This expression of love is wonderful and encouraging, be we can't forget to center all of this around Jesus Christ over everything else. If He isn't the core of our love and our giving, we have nothing.
