Work

“Be thankful for your job.” I’ve heard those words spoken to me and to those around me so many times in the past few months. I’ve been told, and grown to learn, that in this economy, we should be protecting our jobs, because, “any job is a good job.” Gratefulness for what we have has been the theme of so many bible studies and coffee cup conversations. And yes, I’ve bought into that whole mindset, and agree with it.

But, is that all a job should be—just a job? Should our workplace be a location where we drop off our minds and bodies for a given period of time, but leave our hearts and souls elsewhere? It’s a very tempting thing to do, especially on a Monday morning after a holiday weekend. Just get through the day, right?

I know we all have taken this approach from time to time, but I’m thoroughly convinced that God cares about our lives and actions in the workplace just as much as He does about what we do at church or any other part of our lives. He has great plans for us at work, and once we discover them, we can start the adventure of joining God on divine assignments.

Now, I’m not saying that going to work should be a missions field blanketed by happy-go-lucky feelings everyday, but it is an opportunity to share God’s love, even just through our actions. Every part of life is territory for God to work in the lives of both us and those around us. It’s important for us to do our best to reflect the Holy Spirit that lives within us wherever we are, even at our jobs, whatever that may be right now.

Have a good week!
