I'm not one to go to see many movies in the theatre, but this past week I conceded and watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." I guess all the hype around this movie got me out of my daily routine and to the box office (I promise, I won't turn this week's newsletter into a movie review). In short, this is the movie of a man who was born with all the physical characteristics and symptoms of an 80 year-old, but with the life experience, the innocence and the heart of a child. Throughout the movie, Benjamin (played by Brad Pitt), physically grows younger while he moves throughout his life. To be direct, it's depressing to see so many people who have affected his life die as they age in the opposite way of him. I'm convinced this movie will press anyone to think about the value of time and to cherish our relationships while we have them.
To me, this movie was a reflection of the deep longings that are within the human soul-a longing for eternal life and a longing for perfection. I'm convinced that as children, unstained from the world around us, we are born as idealists. As we move throughout our years on this earth, life's experiences, both good and bad, continue to shape our worldview. As we go forward in life, we experience many of life's heartaches and begin to narrow our perspective of the possibility of a perfect world. We even begin to shape our idea of heaven into something much less than what it actually is. Our idea of perfection becomes less perfect than what we once thought it to be, if you will.
But I'm overwhelmingly convinced that God sent His Son to conquer death in order to tear down the walls of our stained world, and to give us even more than our dreams. Jesus Christ gives us so much hope when we realize that even our idea of a perfect world is only on the edge of eternity, and not completely perfect as God has intended our lives to be.
I am so thrilled when I watch a movie like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," because all of the heartache he faced as those he loved dearly were dying around him will no longer exist in heaven. But it is our job, here and now, to bring heaven on earth. "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
Chase your dreams here and now. There is a reason why we are born with an idealistic perspective on life, and it's because we are made in the image of the perfect one. But in so doing, recognize that those we journey with are not perfect. Our imperfections are made better by other's strengths. That is why we need each other along life's journey. Alone, we have our serious faults, but together, I think we can accomplish more than we give ourselves credit for. Let's not be afraid to make a difference, together.
